Swedish troops in Latvia to join NATO brigade

Jan 19, 2025

Stockholm [Sweden], January 19: The first Swedish soldiers have arrived in Latvia to reinforce the NATO brigade in the Baltic state bordering Russia and Belarus.
Troops and equipment from the most recent country to join the Western military alliance arrived by ship at the port of Riga, the Latvian Ministry of Defence said on Saturday.
They are to become part of the multinational NATO battle group stationed in Latvia, which is led by Canada and includes 3,500 soldiers from 13 members of the bloc. This is the first time Sweden has deployed its own soldiers to another NATO country since joining the now 32-state alliance in March 2024.
The parliament in Stockholm approved the deployment in December.
